Demibooks® Composer Private Beta

17 Jan 2011 / 0 Comments / in Announcements, Composer, Electronic Publishing/by Natalie Murrow

The Martin Luther King holiday has traditionally been a great time to pause from the hectic start that each New Year brings, as well as reflect on the holiday season that just passed. Today, it’s also a great time for Demibooks to announce the industry’s first tablet-based software platform for interactive books, Demibooks® Composer.

Demibooks@ ComposerWith Demibooks Composer, we enable our customers to create and publish richly interactive book apps faster and in cost effective ways. We hope this contributes in a positive way to the industry’s ongoing search for viable business models as it slowly but surely embraces the shift to interactive reading on digital platforms.

Our team has been working hard on the platform and authoring tools, and in the months ahead we will work closely with publishers, their intermediaries, and self-publishing authors to refine and fine-tune the product. I’m pleased to announce a limited private Beta of Demibooks Composer. Please contact us if you’d like to join the program or find out more.

The holidays were an exciting time at Demibooks as we launched Stacey Williams-Ng’s Astrojammies. The response and reviews have been great, and it was pleasing to get on Apple’s New and Noteworthy list for books! If you haven’t yet downloaded Astrojammies, both full and Lite versions are available on the App Store so check it out and let us know what you think.

I’m looking forward to New York City next week as we join two key conferences to kick off the New Year. First up is Digital Book World 2011 and, later in the week, the 2011 Winter Conference of The Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators. Stacey and I will both send updates from the events so keep an eye on our social media feeds and this blog!

I hope the holidays and New Year have been wonderful for you as well. The industry is poised for great things in 2011, and we are just getting started. Thank you for your support for Demibooks and Happy New Year!

iPad

The first tablet-based software platform for creating interactive book apps

Demibooks® Composer is the first iPad-based authoring software for creating interactive books. If you’re an author, illustrator, designer or publisher, and you’ve got a story to tell – then this app is for you! Composer is affordable, versatile and incredibly easy-to-use.

Create your own book apps with realistic physics, animation, sounds and visual effects. Share your stories with your friends via Composer or use our PrintShop web service to publish your book app back to the App Store!

Demibooks Composer allows you to harness the touch functionality of the iPad, and bring those features to your book app designs. Composer offers designers and authors a full set of tools and options for building interactive content, without requiring any programming.

Here’s a video that shows an overview of Composer’s features:

Advantages of Demibooks®Composer:

iPad-based authoring process

Demibooks® Composer is the only authoring software on the market for creating book apps on the device itself. In this design, the interactive nature of the book app is extended into the creative process. This means the entire authoring process is interactive.

Taking advantage of the intuitive features of the iPad, Composer utilizes similar pinch, swipe, and touch gestures, drop-down menus, and basic functionalities. By creating the book app on the device, you can see how your book app will read on the product itself, to see what works best, versus desktop software which requires users to toggle between a desktop version and what it looks like on the device.

Code-free

Creating book apps from scratch involves knowing difficult code, graphic design, and user experience design. Composer minimizes the amount of technical know-how you need, thus allowing anyone to become a storyteller and author. Composer is specifically designed for users who have little to no technical or graphic design expertise. It’s simple enough for a first-time or seasoned author to pick up. Creating a book app also becomes a great experience to share between a parent and child.

Superior Feature Set

Demibooks® Composer was designed by seasoned game developers, mobility engineers, and user experience designers who built in a feature set to fuel today’s most dynamic imaginations. Composer leverages the iPad’s touch interface, sound recording ability, camera, touch interface, and more with an advanced set of special effects to fully bring your book to life. Using Composer’s “Physics” function, you can make objects float or bounce around the page or assign objects real-life properties such as gravity or stickiness which is triggered when readers touch the object. Composer’s “Behaviors” feature set allows you to customize basic movements and animations. Other features allow you to layer in audio, video, and other special effects to your illustrations to truly create an interactive reading experience.

Affordable

Contracting with book app consultants can cost upwards of 50K. Demibooks® Composer was designed to be affordable to both publishers and first-time users who are interested in tapping into their creative juices by crafting their own book app. Demibooks offers several packages, from singular apps to multiple apps centered on a bestselling series or character.

What Authors and Publishers are Saying about Demibooks® Composer:

“Demibooks made our first enhanced ebook possible, providing the tools (literally) to seamlessly adapt and preserve our book’s charm and artistic integrity.” –Kira Lynn, Publisher of Kane Miller Books, a division of EDC Publishing, on the book app A Garden for Pig

“As primarily a print designer, Demibooks has enabled me to cross-over to the multimedia world of ebooks. The user interface was fairly simple and the effects included were powerful and brought our book to life. I would definitely recommend Demibooks to any graphic designer interested in a comprehensive tool to create and publish professional level ebooks.”  –Kat Goddard, designer at Kane Miller Books, a Division of EDC Publishing

“One of the simplest, most elegant tools for rapid prototyping and graphic design on any platform. Composer leverages the unique qualities of the iPad, while giving authors powerful tools to create amazing reading experiences … without knowing any software code!” –John Marc Green, author and illustrator of Steampunk Chess Puzzles

“I’ve been developing my project idea for a long time, and Composer has been the perfect tool to finally bring it to life. It was exciting to see one on my characters, an astronaut, float around in space using the “Physics” feature and its various settings. And I love that you can guide the astronaut through space using a swipe of your finger. Demibooks® Composer is a powerful publishing application that lets me focus on the art and storytelling without getting bogged down in the technical aspects of coding.” –Dave Opie, coauthor of Did the Big Bang Make a Sound? Simple Answers to Cosmic Questions, www.spacemandave.com

“Composer brought our imagination to life and opened our minds to new ways of interacting with our children.”  –Branden Hart, co-author of the children’s picture book app, A is vir Aardvark
