On Friday April 26th, Rafiq Ahmed and I traveled to Milwaukee to jury the final presentations created by the class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) using Demibooks Composer. Stacey Williams-Ng, creative consultant for Demibooks and Publisher at Little Bahalia, taught the full semester elective course “Interactive Book Design on the iPad”. Demibooks partnered with MIAD to provide the students our Composer Studio software and support.
Each student was provided an iPad, and they were given the entire semester to compose their own stories, artwork, animations, and sound effects into an interactive book app. The results were very impressive and diverse. There were quite a variety of book apps ranging from children’s books, fairytales, to graphic novels, comics, and even a cookbook. Each student found their own way to use Composer to tell their story. An extra competitive twist was added by the winner of the final competition being eligible to be published by Stacey’s new digital press, who offered a modest sign up fee and revenue share from App Store sales. Demibooks will also help runners up publish their work after necessary final modifications.
Little Bahalia is a new publishing house that produces book apps made in Composer, the first being “Troop is a Group of Monkeys”. MIAD students appreciated the opportunity to have access to a publishing house and a pathway to getting their work on to the App Store.
Stacey, Rafiq and I were accompanied by two other jurors on the MIAD faculty and a local children’s book author. Together we helped to decide who the winner would be based the judging criteria laid out by Stacey. We were to judge the students on their storytelling ability, their graphic sensibility, artwork and animations, use of the Demibooks platform and if we thought their story was a good fit for their target audience.
We saw a total of twelve projects, and judged them all by tallied numerical votes. We were very impressed by all of the student’s work, which made choosing only one winner very difficult. However we finally came to an agreement. We have to wait until Friday when Stacey announces the winner(s) – check in then!
