Silkscreen

Silkscreen is a platform for rich web content to be viewed offline as an iPad app. It renders HTML pages in a linear book-like style, with interactive page curls and a custom popover system. Using the WebKit browser engine, Silkscreen can render CSS, Javascript, and advanced HTML5 elements like embedded Video and Canvas. Custom popovers can be launched from embedded links or Javascript triggers, and these can display their own HTML pages – which can be offline – embedded in the app, or live from the web. Popovers can be expanded and dismissed with gestures, and may also display native app content that hooks into music libraries, map data, tilt sensors, device cameras – anything!

But what does all of this mean? What can you create with a technology like Silkscreen? If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video by Chafie Creative must be worth a million. Here is an interactive novel – an Immersedition – we worked on with Chafie, which shows off a broad range of Silkscreen capabilities. The novel is The Survivors by Amanda Havard, and it’s available now in the App Store.
