Apple has added a new Kids Category with 3 sub categories below 6, 6-8, 9-11 as well as some new rules. What does it all mean? What we know :-
- No behavioral advertising, not a problem for any our customer base.
- Parental gates are required on any out of app links ( to web sites, iTunes store, rate, comment etc ) or any commerce IAP or website purchases. What qualifies as a “Parental Gate” is not specified although a new clause was added to allow an App to ask for a Date of Birth for the sole purpose of gating. If an “Are you sure Yes/No” is sufficient or if we will need to add more types is unknown. Does this affect App Rate-ers as well : Don’t know.
When does all of this “hit”, once again, we don’t know ; The rumours are strong for a Sept 10th Apple event to unveil the iPhone 5S with iOS 7, but the official word is still “Fall”, so the Autumn in the US. Anybody who has seen the iOS 7 betas will be able to tell you that the iPad version lags behind the iPhone version significantly. Apple didn’t even show iOS 7 at WWDC this year on an iPad nor was it initially available for iPad. This has lead to rumours that iOS 7 will not be released on the iPad until later this year post the iPhone release. October is the current favourite speculated date for a potential iPad roll-out of iOS 7 with a new iPad revision. A Retina Mini or Mini with Retina Display as Apple would say, would come as no surprise to anybody who knows Apple, especially given the new Nexus 7 refresh from Google has beaten them to the punch.
